As part of the research project entitled ‘SHIFT - How does a shift in forest tree species composition affect soil organic carbon storage in ancient forests of Wallonia: site conditions, biotic interactions, and reversibility’ involving partners from three different Belgian universities, the Earth and Life Institute (UCLouvain) offers a 4-yr PhD scholarship to study the interacting effects of soil conditions and stand composition on SOC storage. 

 

Your key tasks as a PhD student in the SHIFT project are: (i) participate in the research environment at the host institution and the network activities of SHIFT; (ii) manage your research project; (iii) take PhD courses; (iv) write scientific articles and your PhD thesis; (v) participate in congresses; (vi) teach and disseminate your research.

 

Requirements: 

- Owing a Masters degree in soil science, forest science, environmental science, or a comparable diploma.

- Skills in statistics and data analysis, and experience with the R software.

- Ability to communicate/report clearly in English, both orally and in writing.

 

Full time. Starting date: 2 January 2026.

As part of a 5-yr forest research programme funded by the ‘Service Public de Wallonie – Département de la Nature et des Forêts’, we offer a 2-yr PhD scholarship, extendable up to 4 yrs, to study the impacts of thinning in mixed-species stands. 

 

Your key tasks as a PhD student are: (i) participate in the research environment at the host institution and the network activities of the project; (ii) manage your research project; (iii) take PhD courses; (iv) write scientific articles and your PhD thesis; (v) participate in congresses; (vi) each and disseminate your research.

 

Requirements: 

- Owing a Masters degree in Forest science or environmental science, or a comparable diploma.

- Strong background in forest science, forest ecology, soil science, environmental science, or related fields.

- Skills in statistics and data analysis, and experience with the R software.

- Ability to communicate/report clearly in English, both orally and in writing. Knowledge of French or willingness to learn French language is requested.
