FAQ Admissions – Masters at EPL

The curriculum used as a reference is that of the bachelor's degree in engineering sciences, civil engineering specialization, from the EPL (https://uclouvain.be/en-prog-2025-fsa1ba).

This core curriculum is supplemented by at least the courses from the bachelor's program that precedes the master's specialization. The priority technical skills for each master's degree are listed in the appendix to the document setting out the admission criteria.

For non-EU degrees, given the diversity of training programs and the nature of the courses, at least four years of study after secondary school are required. Holders of a professiona bachelor's degree, a DUT or DEUA are not eligible, as these programs are too different from the above-mentioned reference curricula.

There is no universal rule due to the wide variety of backgrounds and institutions of origin. In general, however, typical cases of rejection are :

• students whose undergraduate studies have taken significantly longer than the norm, for example, due to repeating a year;

• profiles showing deficiencies in priority subjects;

• an average grade below 12/20 for all successful academic years;

• an average grade below 14/20 for the final year of study.

For applications for admission for the 2026–2027 academic year :

Holders of non-Belgian degrees must submit proof of their level of mathematics. Results from the GRE Subject Test in Mathematics or other proof of your level of mathematics are required.

The result of the GRE Subject Test in Mathematics must be provided in the form of a Test Taker Score Report, to be included in the application. It is advisable to find out well in advance about the dates and procedures for the GRE Subject Test in Mathematics.

For applications for admission for the 2027–2028 academic year :

Applicants with a non-Belgian degree must submit in their application an internationally recognized academic proof of their mathematical proficiency.

Acceptable proofs are:

- Sufficiently high scores on an internationally recognized mathematics test: GRE Subject Test in Mathematics (submitted as a Test Taker Score Report), Cambridge STEP test, Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE, Mathematics - MA), or IIT-Joint Admission Test for Masters (Mathematics - MA). A successful proof of academic level for the GRE Subject Test in Mathematics is percentile 30 (i.e. in the top 70 %), or equivalent levels for the other mentioned tests. Lower scores may also be accepted as proof of academic level in mathematics, depending on the rest of the files, including the required degree. Reaching this level is by no means sufficient for acceptation as the other criteria listed in this document must be met (in particular, a good command of the content listed in the appendix corresponding to your chosen degree). It is advisable to inquire well in advance about test dates and procedures.

- Or successful participation in a recognized national or international mathematics competition;

- Or having obtained a degree with a strong mathematics component from a highly ranked university (e.g., in the top 500) according to the current year's Times Higher Education World University Ranking.

Exceptionally, other evidence demonstrating an internationally recognized academic level may also be submitted. The Louvain School of Engineering (EPL) will assess at its sole discretion the strength of this evidence. Lists and grades of mathematics courses taken, course descriptions, GRE General test results, and letters of recommendation will not be considered sufficient evidence of academic level in mathematics.

The decision is based on the entire application; therefore, there are no absolute criteria (for example, there is no necessary and sufficient GRE Subject Mathematics score).

Master's courses at the Ecole polytechnique de Louvain (EPL) are taught in English. You must have sufficient command of the English language to be able to follow the master's courses.

For applications for admission for the 2026–2027 academic year :

Holders of non-Belgian degrees must submit proof of their English language proficiency. Those who hold a degree awarded in English or have taken the GRE Subject Test in Mathematics are exempt from providing proof of English language proficiency.

The required level of English corresponds to a minimum score of 87 on the TOEFL iBT (or TOEFL at-home), 6 on the IELTS Academic, 785 on the TOEIC, or passing the Cambridge FCE (First Certificate in English) exam. Alternatively, the Test Taker Score Report from the GRE General Test may also be submitted as proof of English proficiency.

For applications for admission for the 2027–2028 academic year :

Holders of a non-Belgian diploma must submit proof of their English proficiency. The required English proficiency level corresponds to a minimum score of 87 on the TOEFL iBT (or TOEFL at home), 6 on the IELTS Academic, 785 on the TOEIC, or successful completion of the Cambridge FCE (First Certificate in English). 

Those holding a diploma awarded in English, or who have submitted the Test Taker Score Report for the GRE Subject Test in Mathematics, or the results of another internationally recognized mathematics test (Cambridge STEP, Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering Mathematics, IIT-JAM MA), or the Test Taker Score Report for the GRE General with sufficient scores, are exempt from providing proof of English proficiency.

Depending on your profile and previous education, you may also be required to meet additional entry requirements.

Additional admission requirements are designed to ensure that you have acquired the prerequisite knowledge for the program you wish to study. They may consist of one or more additional courses (maximum 60 additional credits). These courses are part of your study program.

Additional admission requirements are determined after analysis of your application and/or selection interview.

A selection interview may be organized to assess the candidate's mastery of the basic concepts required to participate in the master's program in question, as well as their ability to hold a conversation in English.

Admission may be refused after the interview. The decision on whether such an interview is necessary is at the sole discretion of the EPL. When an interview is organized, the candidate will be invited to participate in a video conference by email sent to the address provided in the application file. If no response to this email is received within 14 calendar days, the application will be deemed inadmissible.

Enrolment on a course entails the payment of registration fees. The amount of fees payable depends on the course chosen and/or nationality.

These registration fees are given as a guide and may vary depending on your situation. Please consult the full fee schedule for the exact amount of your registration fees. The university has put measures in place to reduce the cost of studying in certain cases.

Students who are not citizens of the European Union and are not considered Belgian students (except for specialized master's degrees, doctorates, international joint degrees, or Erasmus Mundus exchanges) will be asked to pay a €200 application fee after confirming their online application. If their application for enrolment is accepted, these fees will be deducted from the enrolment fees for the program in which they are enrolled. In all other cases, these fees will not be refunded.
