hoover | Louvain-la-Neuve

Aida Martínez Suárez is a PhD candidate under the supervision of Professor Axel Gosseries
(UCLouvain) and Professor Francisco Javier Gil Martín (University of Oviedo). She holds
a degree in Philosophy from the University of Oviedo and a Master’s in Bioethics and Law
from the University of Barcelona. She is currently working on population ethics and the
ethics of extinction. Her main focus is on the acceptability of human extinction and the
value of humanity. The thesis seeks to offer an answer to the question of whether each
present generation has a moral duty or obligation to guarantee that they’re not the last
generation, or if, under certain circumstances, human extinction could be morally
acceptable. Her thesis viva voce is expected for September 2027.

She has taught “Contemporary Political Philosophy” at the University of Oviedo (2024-25
and 2025-26), plus seminars in “Political Philosophy” (2024-25). She also taught five hours
at the PUMUO Program (university for adults) on the course of “Bioethics” (2024-25).

She is the current organizer of the VIVES Seminar at the Hoover Chair.
