Winter course - Ethical and emotional challenges of field research

A unique course for social scientists  

Are you a researcher whose work involves interacting with others in the field? Are you faced with ethical dilemmas and emotional challenges? This course is for you. 

Open to social science researchers using qualitative or mixed approaches, it offers a collective reflection on: 

  • Ethical issues in field research 

  • The emotional impact of interactions with participants 

  • The researcher's position and its implications 

Teaching methods 

  • Interactive lessons based on case studies and testimonials 

  • Collective work in relation to literature 

  • Drama exercises on emotional issues 

  • A serious game (EDICO) related to the themes covered 

Course content 

  • Ethical challenges : access to the field, trust of participants, security, dissemination of results 

  • Emotional challenges : personal impact of research, managing emotions 

  • Positionality : interactions with the field, researcher's posture, knowledge production  

Practical details  

Fees : 

  • 400€ (UCLouvain externals) 
  • 250€ (UCLouvain internals) 
  • 150€ (PSAD UCLouvain students) 

Includes accommodation and meals for 5 days, the course takes place in February each year 
Places limited to 20 participants
