Extension of residence permit

Applications to extend student residency for non-EU nationals must be submitted to the local authorities no later than 15 days before the expiry of the residency permit currently in your possession.

Documents required for the extension of student residence 2025-2026  
  • The standard form known as “Annex 1” must be completed with the “2025-2026 definitive academic registration” option ticked for UCLouvain.

To receive your “Annex 1”, you must be re-registered at UCLouvain. If you sit an exam in August/September, you can re-register after the results.

If the renewal application is submitted within the deadline, but not all the documents are enclosed, the student will be informed and has 15 days from the date indicated in the letter from the local administration to submit the missing documents. On the other hand, if the missing documents are not submitted within the deadline, the local authority may declare the application inadmissible

If the local administration forwards your application for renewal to the Immigration Office, it must reach a decision within 90 days of the date of the acknowledgement of receipt sent to the applicant who has submitted a complete file.

If the Immigration Office is unable to reach a decision before the expiry of the A card, the local authorities will issue the student with an attestation temporarily covering his or her stay in Belgium. This attestation is valid for 45 days and can be extended twice for the same period.

Transcripts of exams taken in 2024-2025 (except for doctoral students).

Standard form (known as “Annex 2”) - Attestation of study progress at the end of the 2024-2025 academic year, stating the credits obtained.

Proof that you have health insurance covering all risks in Belgium. The certificate of affiliation must state your first name, last name and the period of cover.

A valid passport.

Extension of residence permit, job-seeking or business start-up year

This provision concerns third-country (non-EU) students with an A residence permit.

After completing their studies in Belgium, third-country (non-EU) nationals may request authorization to extend their stay for a maximum of 12 months in order to find a job or set up a business, with a view to obtaining a residence permit for work purposes.

This provision also applies to third-country nationals who make or have made use of their right to mobility, and who have graduated from a higher education establishment in another EU member state, but have spent part of their course of study in Belgium.
