LSM x Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) Double Degree

The Double Degree programme with the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) in Lisbon, Portugal, is designed for students seeking to combine strong managerial and analytical skills with a profound understanding of industries and innovation processes.

Programme at a Glance: LSM/IST Master's

This highly specialised, full-time Master's track focuses on the convergence of management science and engineering.

Standard period of study: 4 semesters (2years), full time

Start: Fall semester (mid-September at LSM)

Language: Entirely in English

Degrees awarded: Double degree student who has completed the required credits of each university will obtain two degrees, one from each university: the "Master en ingénieur de gestion, à finalité spécialisée" from the Louvain School of Management (legally titled in French, the programme is entirely in English) and "Master in Industrial Engineering and Management" from the Instituto Superior Técnico.

Fees: Tuition fees are paid at the "home" university, for the entire duration of the studies. Administrative fees might be required at the "host" university.

Double Degree Structure

If you apply through LSM, your home university will be LSM, you will therefore spend your first year at LSM and your second year at IST, your host university.

This programme is exclusively available to students willing to study in Business Engineering or Industrial Engineering and Management.

Dual Specialisation: Industrial Engineering & Management

This programme offers three clear paths, allowing you to choose a focused on Business Engineering or Industrial Engineering and Management.

The combined specialization offers added value in Marketing or Finance. While we encourage students to follow this proven combination, you may submit a specific project proposal for a different major combination to the Educational Advisor for review.

Integrated Master's Thesis Requirements

The Double Degree requires the completion of one single Master's thesis to satisfy the requirements of both universities.

Supervision: As decided between LSM and IST, the student will have to find a professor, from the host university who will act as the main supervisor: this professor will supervise and advise the student during the entire length of the Master’s thesis and will be present at the oral defense, and will take part in the discussion about the grade.

Procedure: The thesis is written in English. Students typically begin preparatory work during the first year. The Master’s thesis counts towards 20 ECTS for the degree awarded by LSM and towards 30 ECTS for the degree awarded by IST.

Defense: A mandatory oral defense is required. This takes place virtually (via videoconference) in the presence of at least the two professors.
