Continuing education studies are for individuals who already hold a higher education degree. They are designed to update knowledge and enrich prior higher education. Enrolment for these courses is managed by the Institut universitaire de formation continue (University Institute for Continuing Education) rather than by the Enrolment Office.
UCLouvain is involved in the Higher Education in Emergencies movement, which promotes access to higher education for refugees. Further information can be found on this page.
Anyone wishing to take stand-alone course units at UCLouvain as a student-at-large student may request authorisation from the faculty in question.
Once authorisation has been obtained, you must complete the special application form and send both the authorisation and the registration form to the Enrolment Office.
Details:
- You may take one or more stand-alone course units for a maximum of 20 credits (standalone courses and language courses taken at ILV combined).
- Citizens of countries outside the European Union who are not considered Belgian students must be enrolled in an academic programme at UCLouvain in order to take stand-alone course units.
- Any application for one or more stand-alone course units part of a course programme from which the student has been refused on the grounds that the course cannot be funded will be automatically rejected.
Stand-alone course unit tuition fee:
- 1 to 10 credits: €139.20
- > 10 credits: €13.92/credit
In the event of cumulative enrolment in stand-alone course unit(s) and language classes for a number greater than 10 credits, language class tuition will apply.
Anyone wishing to take language courses at the Institute of Modern Languages at UCLouvain (ILV) must first submit a registration request to the ILV.
Once authorisation has been obtained from the ILV, it will be necessary to finalise the registration with the Registration Office. To do so, the following documents must be sent by email to the Registration Office:
- The duly completed special registration form
- The email from the ILV confirming your authorisation to register
- A copy of both sides of your identity card
A few details:
- The limit is 20 credits per academic year (including stand-alone courses and language courses).
- Citizens of countries outside the European Union who are not considered Belgian students must be enrolled in an academic programme at UCLouvain in order to take language courses.
Language course enrolment fees:
- 1 to 10 credits = €139.20
- 11 credits or more = €139.20 + €90.00/course
If you enrol in individual teaching units and language courses for a total of more than 10 credits, the language course fee applies.
The board considers applications from those who are unable to enrol on a regular basis at a university and would like to undertake basic bachelor’s or master’s coursework at a university in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation (such as UCLouvain!).
Eligibility criteria:
- You must be unable to enrol as a regular student at a university
- You must not have been deemed ineligible for funding for your chosen course
Enrolment procedure
Every June and September, UCLouvain offers one-month sessions of bachelor’s and master’s level coursework. For application and more detailed information, please complete this form, then contact the UCLouvain Enrolment Office on the relevant campus. The board is conducted in French only.
Required documents:
- proof that it is impossible for you to enrol on a regular basis at a university;
- proof of your activities over the past five years;
- certified copy of your certificate/attestation of eligibility for university education, in accordance with anticipated admission requirements;
- certified copy of any post-secondary education diploma(s);
- copy of both sides of your identity card;
- residence certificate.
Application periods:
- January to March 2026 for the June 2026 study session;
- May to June for the September 2026 study session;
- only for students who did not pass the June 2026 study session: from 1 to 31 July 2026 for the September 2026 study session.
Tuition fee:
- €384 for the 2025-26 academic year.
Are you a member of staff and would like to host an intern? The procedure varies depending on the type of internship.
Unpaid internship
- No registration with UCLouvain is required.
- Your intern is insured by the educational institution in which they are enrolled
- If necessary, an access request can be submitted via the Service Desk portal.
Paid internship
- You will need to submit your request to the ARH. More information.
IFAPME internship
- You will need to submit your request via the HR portal.
As a doctor, you have the opportunity to apply for the competitive entrance exam for medical specialities at UCLouvain.

General procedure
Are you a professor looking to host a PhD student from another university who wishes to conduct research at UCLouvain? Please follow the procedure outlined on the HR portal.
Special case: Non-EU PhD student and Stay longer than 3 months
If the PhD student is a non-European Union national and wishes to carry out a research stay longer than 3 months, in addition to the steps to be taken with the HR, an additional registration process with the Registration Office will be required.
Registration file composition:
- Identity document
- Signed visiting doctoral student form
- Signed research certificate agreement
This registration request must be submitted by email to the Registration Office of your campus.
